Optimizing Title Tags

by Ali Husayni, in Q&A & SEO Tips, on December 14, 2008

“Why don’t we use the same title for each website page?” was a question put to me by one of our link-building specialists.

Arguably, the most important piece of optimization is placing the most important keywords within a site’s title tag - the text between the two <title> and </title> html tags.

We have tested that by changing a site’s title tag, we’ve managed to bring it from the third page of Google for a very competetive keyphrase to the first page.

There are no solid rules on how to optimize title tags, however, here are some tips:

- A page’s title tag needs to have the main keyword within it.
- The title tag should not be too long - more than one hundred characters.
- It should not be too short - only containing the main keyword.
- Each site’s page should have a different title tag - this is important if you’re positioning your site for Google.
- Do not repeat your keywords more than twice.

Title Tags and CMS Software - Joomla, Drupal, etc.

Most Content Management Systems (CMS) repeat the same title tag or a portion of it on every HTML page. Also, some take the name of each page and use it as the title tag.

To fully optimize the title tag on a CMS based site you need to modify the core code of the system. In order to do so, you need to know the programing language of the CMS and understand where each section of the code is located.

    Hi Ali,

Thanks for sharing these useful information but there are some more questions:

    1. What do you mean by “Do not repeat your keywords more than twice.”? Do you mean we should not use the keywords on one page’s title more than twice??

    2. If we have a site and optimize it as the way you’ve mention and after awhile we decide to consider another keyword for our site, Is it better to edit title tags or build another page and optimize it with new keyword?

    Sincerely,
    Heliya
